Rowing at Mossbourne

Over 100 students from across the Federation take part in regular rowing activity

Participation in school sport has a positive impact on students’ physical and mental wellbeing, and helps them develop key life skills – communication, teamwork, resilience – they need to reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond.

We chose rowing as a specialism because it is one of the few sports young people can start in their teens and progress to top-level competition by the time they leave school.

Mossbourne Rowing Club

With an emphasis on having fun while learning the basics of rowing, the Rowing Club has proved to be a popular extra-curricular programme and is open to all students (Year 7-11).

In addition to indoor rowing and gym-based fitness sessions, Club rowers in Year 8 and above have the option of joining on-water learn-to-row sessions.

Not all Club rowers aspire to row competitively for their school, region or country. Those who do can progress to our more rigorous Rowing Academy programme.

Mossbourne Rowing Academy

Open to Year 9-11 students who are committed to rowing competitively, Rowing Academy training sessions take place before school, after school and at weekends.

Key achievements by Rowing Academy crews:

  • Top 10 finishes at Schools’ Head of the River, Junior Sculling Head and National Schools’ Regatta
  • Qualified for Henley Royal Regatta
  • Individual rowers have competed at the British Junior Trials, the Coupe de la Jeunesse and the World Rowing Championships

In Partnership with London Youth Rowing

Our partnership with the sports charity London Youth Rowing gives our rowers access to their facilities at the Royal Docks and in the Olympic Park, as well as their rowing expertise and experienced coaching staff.

Head Coach, Tom Wilkinson, represented Great Britain at eight World Championships in both the Sculling and Sweep disciplines during his rowing career.

Support Us

To ensure there are no financial barriers to participation, unlike most rowing programmes, Mossbourne students are not charged any fees to join the Rowing Club or Academy. All costs, including kit, training camps and race entry fees, are covered.

If you are interested in supporting the programme, please contact our Development Office.
